Chapter Thirteen

Tristan was sitting at the dining room table reading the morning paper and drinking a cup of coffee when he decided to pick up his phone. He really didn’t like doing business before breakfast, but given that he wasn’t going to the office today, he had no other choice.

“Hello, Mr. Summerfield.”

“Mr. Deveroux, how are things going in Celestial?” Tristan said, leaning back in his chair, when he knocked over his coffee cup. Jumping up, he cursed, reaching for a napkin only to knock over his glass of water.

“Is everything okay, Tristan?”

“Hang on a sec,” Tristan ground out into the phone, placing it on the table. This was not how he wanted the conversation to go. He needed to get an update, not to play a maid. He really should have waited until he felt the table. He knew breakfast wasn’t for business. It never was.

“Uh, Tristan, should I call you back later?” Aries asked.

“No. I’ve just gotten myself into a situation.” Just then, Violet emerged from her bedroom. She was still groggy but beautiful. He said nothing when she walked over and stood before the table, unsure. Getting up, Tristan pulled out a chair next to him and motioned for her to sit. When she walked over to him, he smiled when she saw the soft pillow on the seat of the chair.

“I figured you might still be a little sore.”

Violet gasped and blushed scarlet. “You heard us?”

Failing miserably to hide his smile, Tristan nodded. “You sound heavenly when you come, sweetheart.” If he weren’t holding onto the chair he would have fallen to the ground in laughter. Her expression was priceless. However, when she plopped down on the pillow and winced, miffed, Tristan quirked at her little temper. Apparently Sasha’s shrinking Violet wasn’t so docile, after all.

Tristan sighed, reaching for his phone and said into it, “Okay, how are things, Mr. Deveroux?”

“I just got here last night, Tristan.” Aries groaned.

“Is everything all right there with you?” Tristan asked. “You sound pained.”

“You have no idea,” Aries muttered.

“When do you meet with the city council?”

“It’s not that easy here, Tristan. There are certain hoops I have to jump through before the Council is convened. I had told you this before I left New York that Celestial doesn’t work like most towns. They are different here.”

“They pay taxes just like everyone else.”

“I wouldn’t bank on it.” Aries sighed, muttering something unintelligible. Trying to reign in his temper, Tristan didn’t want to upset Violet any more than he already did. He wanted this morning to be peaceful and relaxing. And so far it wasn’t.

“Just get that damn meeting and do what you have to. I need those papers signed. Now, I have to go.”

“Yes, sir,” Tristan had heard before the line went dead. Sitting back down at the head of the table, he watched silently as she reached for her napkin and flicked it soundly in the air, eliciting a loud pop before she placed it on her lap.
